Eternal Memory — Vichnaya Pamyat

Death of Mitred Msgr. Stephen Chomko

On Tuesday, November 4, 2008, Rt. Rev. Mitred Msgr. Stephen Chomko fell asleep in the Lord, GOD GRANT HIM ETERNAL REST!

Monsignor was born January 6, 1922 in Scranton, PA and was ordained to the priesthood July 12, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA by Bishop Constantine Bohachevsky.  For many years, prior to his resignation and move to PA in 1996, Monsignor served as Pastor in: Michigan, Syracuse, New Haven, Rochester, Elmira Heights, Auburn, Boston and finally Hartford, as Dean of the Boston and then of the Hartford Protopesbytery, and as the Eparchial Econome.  From ‘84 to ‘86 Msgr. Chomko also served as President of the Providence Association.

While in Rochester, Msgr. Chomko built St. Josaphat School as well as the Rectory and Convent.

Renewal and Redemption

In 1995, many people believed that America’s oldest civil rights group was near-bankrupt and mismanaged beyond repair.

But the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) wasn’t washed up.  It just needed the strong and determined leadership of someone like humanrights giants Thurgood Marshall or Roy Wilkins.

That leader turned out to be five-term Congressman Kweisi Mfume who left his Maryland legislative seat for the

NAACP hot seat.  Mfume remembered that “when I was a child, the NAACP was dominant in our community.  My mother would pass out literature for them.”  Under Mfume’s leadership, the organization’s debt has been erased.  He also “wants to create a sense of activism again...Its efforts were never designed to help just blacks; it was designed to make America better.”

Every citizen can make his or her country better.  It takes hard work and determination.  Worthwhile things always do.

There was a disciple...devoted to good works.  (Acts 9:36)

Creator, get us past our biases and prejudices.

Local Heroines

Gayle Nikolaisen and her three colleagues at Station 10 in Tacoma, Washington, are an all female firefighting crew.

The women consider themselves like any other crew, says Nikolaisen.  “We’re strong, and smart, and we worked way too hard to get here.”  Tacoma Fire Department Chief Ellen Lewis was the city’s first woman firefighter in 1981.  Today, 36 of the city’s 402 fulltime firefighters are women.  Nevertheless, Karen Leming says, “Because we’re women, we have to prove we can do this...We’re a real team.  We trust each other.”

The women have the respect of their male peers.  12-year-veteran Paul Sowers says, “There are plenty of calls when a woman can soothe the victim in a way I never could.  They just have a way about them.”

Women and men aren’t inferior or superior to each other; they simply bring different qualities to the job.  Let us be thankful we can contribute our unique selves to whatever task is at hand.  God created humankind in His image...male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)  We celebrate who and what we are, Creator of all.
