2010 Ukrainian Catholic Retreat

The annual Ukrainian Catholic Retreat sponsored by St Josaphat’s Holy Name Society was a great success. Sixty-eight men and women, including thirty from St. Josaphat’s, attended on August 27 – 29 at Notre Dame Retreat House overlooking Canandaigua Lake. We were fortunate to have great weather for the weekend and even more fortunate to have Bishop Paul as our retreat leader. The Bishop spoke in depth on Christ’s Sermon on the Mount and provided those attending great insight into the Beatitudes that Christ delivered with this sermon. As always there was ample time to see old friends from Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian Parishes from across New York State. There were many new attendees at this year’s retreat and all who spoke with retreat coordinator, Mike Anuszkiewicz, indicated a desire to come back next year.

Three members of St. Josaphat’s celebrated significant milestones in retreat attendance. Both Mary Sydor and Irene Feszczyszyn were recognized for attending their 15th retreat, and Barb Veomette was recognized for attending her 30th retreat! All three ladies have set milestones that should encourage others to continue their attendance and also encourage those who have never attended to start with their 1st retreat 2011!

Please take time to peruse the pictures from this year’s retreat found on the website. If you have questions or comments about this retreat or future retreats contact Mike Anuszkiewicz at manuszkiewicz@msn.com.

Retreat History

Members of Saint Josaphats Ukrainian Catholic Church have a long history of participation in Retreats. For many years men and women of the Parish participated in Men’s Retreats or Women’s Retreats conducted by Roman Rite priests of the Redemptorist Order. The year 1988 was a significant and joyful year in the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.

All around the world we celebrated the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. 1988 was also a milestone in the local Retreat movement.      After years of planning and persistence Charlie Babey’s goal of a Retreat conducted by a priest of our rite was realized the same year that we celebrated the Millennium. In order for this to take place the Retreat became a coed event for the first time. Deacon Willis Homick was instrumental in continuing this tradition as the Retreat grew and drew from Ukrainian Catholic Parishes across New York State and as far away as Pennsylvania and even Texas!

When Deacon Willis’ health prevented him from continuing to be the driving force behind this annual Retreat the Holy Name Society of Saint Josaphats agreed to step in and coordinate the Retreat each year. Now, twenty-two years after the first Ukrainian rite Retreat we are realizing another significant event in long history of the Retreat. For the first time the leader of the Retreat will be a Bishop of our rite. Bishop Paul has consented to lead this year’s retreat. As in past years the Liturgies, services and conferences held during the Retreat weekend will be conducted in the English language to encourage participation by all, including our Roman Catholic brethren. Single men and women and couples are welcome to join us for this years Retreat.
